ClassroomUpdate.com is a free website developed for teachers to easily and quickly create a website so that students and parents can stay current with what is going on inside the classroom.
This system is designed to allow teachers a way to post homework assignments, class announcements, and more in minutes a day! The ClassroomUpdate.com system lets you log in, update your page quickly, and log off so you can get back to your day.

To use ClassroomUpdate.com, teachers must first establish an account. Then all the teacher has to do is briefly enter the assignments, homework, or any additional information that they want to into the assignment matrix. Once this has been done, the websites automatic formatting creates the web page desirable for the teacher to easily communicate with the students and parents.

The advantages for this website are infinite. However, this website is mainly a time saver that allows the teacher to work on other things like grading papers, etc. However one of the limitations of this tool is that the websites aren't going to be to terribly detailed.

The targeted audience for the tool would be the students and parents of the students that the teacher is trying to inform of the assignments due. However, the administrators of the teacher can also view the website to ensure that the teacher is communicating with his or her students.

This tool is wonderful because of its simplicity. I will definitely utilize this tool in the future.

What is the tool?

Google Earth is more than a 3-dimensional representation of the earth’s surface. It utilizes satellite imagery and advanced mapping technologies to allow users to explore multiple dimensions of the Earth, Moon, Mars, Sky, Ocean, 3D buildings, and Historical Images.

How can it be used?

Anyone can use Google Earth to explore all of the above dimensions. Some of the products which have been created using Google Earth include studies on Climate Change, Ancient Rome, and Google Lit Trips. Google Earth is a powerful tool for teachers regardless of their subject content. Math teachers can use it to help students explore distance and angles. Science teachers can use it to explore climate change over time. Literature teachers can take students on Google Lit Trips which help students explore setting and nature v. man conflict/resolution dynamics. And of course Social Studies teachers can use Google Earth to explore geography whether human, environmental, or just as an introduction to Geographic Information Systems.

What are the advantages?

There are several advantages of this tool. The first being how powerful a tool it really is. This is not your average 4^th grade teacher’s classroom map. Google Earth allows students to explore areas of the earth they have never been to and in fact may never get to visit. It allows street level viewing of cities around the world. No matter what you need to view, Google Earth has a view of it. Google Earth features the Moon, Mars, and the Ocean as well, giving students first hand viewing of some of the coolest places imaginable.

What are the disadvantages?

The only disadvantages I have found is there are parts of the world you cannot see quite as well as you may like (think Afghanistan). I was attempting to track a literary character through the Afghan mountains but the image was pixilated as you got closer. This disadvantage only occurs for areas in which countries have specifically requested it or in this case for the protection of U.S. troops.

Who is the audience?

This tool is for a wide variety of audiences from the youngest school children to scientist and geographers the world over. Teachers would be wise to use it as often as possible in their classrooms.

As a middle school language arts/social studies teacher in training, I think I will be utilizing Google Earth in my classroom quite regularly. Between planning Google Lit Trips, exploring the geography (physical, human, and cultural) of the earth, and just having fun with the technology, I think that my classes will have a great time using the software.

How can it be used?

Google docs is an internet tool that allows you to create and store a variety of documents online using a Google account. It allows for back up and storage of documents.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of this tool?
Advantages:

· it allows you to safely store documents,

· allows you to share documents with others

· you can create files to organize your documents

· It is user friendly and easy to navigate

· Its free!

Disadvantages:

· you must have internet connection to view documents and

· if you want to share documents the other person must also have a Google account.

My opinion of the usefulness of this tool?

I personally use this tool quite frequently and find it to be very effective and useful. It allows me to share lesson plans with my supervising teacher and view documents with links that my computer will not open. I think this tool would be very useful for both educators and students alike.

The tool is the called Google Chrome. A program used that takes a minimalist approach when browsing the Internet.

How can it be used?

Since Google Chrome is a fast way for looking for browsers, a teacher can spend more time teaching than looking for a website that they have used before. Google Chrome shows a list of the previous sites and ones that you like.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of this tool?
The design of Google Chrome is very simplistic, and fast but can cause problems within a browser. This can cause the browser to freeze up and would make you have to start a new browsing session. However Google Chrome will only freeze up only one tab, while the other tabs continue to function normally.

Who is the audience for this tool?

Can be used for all teachers and students who have internet access.

Wordle

I am researching Wordle to use as my technology. Worldle is a great tool that can be used to create word clouds and promote brainstorming and critical thinking. It creates, what the website calls, "beautiful word clouds" and I have t0 agree.

The programs takes a chunk of text and breaks it down according to the words that occur most frequently. I imputed "The Moon" by Henry David Thoreau and here is what I created. The original text is as follows:

Wordle is perfect for and classroom that focuses on the liberal arts. As I have said, it encourages students to look at words in a new way and to make new connections. One drawback is that the content is not filtered. However, the administrator does provide a way to block these from school computers.

I personally think this a great tool. While this tool could not support an entire lesson, it certainly would be a conversation starter and a great way for students to think about content as well as context.

What is the tool?

The tool is the software program called Kuta. A software program used to produce math assessments and worksheets.

How can it be used?

Kuta is a type of classroom software that allows teachers to create their own assessments within minutes. Instead of spending hours making quizzes, tests, or worksheets. Kuta software does it for you!

What are the advantages and disadvantages of this tool?
Using this software would be a real advantage for math teachers in that it will save time when producing assessments or activities for their classes. The software has several different domains
of math such as pre-algebra, algebra, and geometry among others. The disadvantages of this tool is that you have to purchase the software. Kuta software allows a free 14 day trial. When purchasing the software, the company discounts the rate when purchasing the software for a site license ( company, corporation, school).

Google Sky

Google Sky

The tool I am using is Google sky. What this does is take the tools from Google maps and point them upwards into space. Most of the data from Google sky comes from photos of the Hubble telescope.
This can be used fro science teachers for an interactive way to show their students the vastness of space. The advantages of this tool is that it can view space in historical, in-fared, and constellations. The only disadvantage is that some of the images of the nebula's are distorted because of the different magnifications of Google Sky. This tool can be used for science teachers as well as Astronomy teachers to show their students. I personally love this tool and could spend days looking at the different constellations.

What is the tool?

Screen Capture Software (SCS) is a tool that can record your computers screen output into a video format and it can add an audio file to the recording. The video file can be save in many formats such as mp4, MOV and Flash. So, you can capture video and audio of you working through a powerpoint presentation which can then be used by the student as a resource to help learn the content.

How can this tool be used?

SCS can be used by teachers and students alike. Teachers can use SCS to create videocasts, which are podcats with a video component, to be used by the student as a supplemental resource. After the teacher creates this resource he/she can make it available to the student on the class website, wikipage or as a file. The student can then watch the resource at his/her convenience. The student can use this resource to help learn the content. This can also be useful for students who were absent when the content was originally presented. The student can also create his/her own videocasts as a class assignment.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of this tool?

Advantages
· SCS can be free!
· Allows students to "catch up" on missed content
· Allows for presentation of content in a more diverse formats

What is the tool?

The tool that I am introducing you to is Skype. Many people are familiar with it and use Skype for talking with friends and family, but did you know that it can be used for education also?

How can it be used?

Skype can be used to introduce students to people that may not ordinarily have access to and expand learning opportunities outside the classroom without ever actually leaving. Business professionals, museum curators, other educators can be brought in from all over the world to enhance lessons and bring real world perspectives to students without having to come to the classroom.

Students in any part of the world can interact with each other with Skype to share cultures. Students can see true representations of others in their actual environment. Foreign language teachers can allow students to interact with other students that speak the language they are learning in that language. For instance, American students can interact with Mexican students in Spanish, allowing them to practice speaking and hearing proper pronunciation. Sick students with computer access can be out of school but not miss a lesson. It is my opinion that Skype can be a very powerful tool in the classroom if implemented properly. The students of today use technology all the time and as teachers we should embrace it and integrate as many technology tools as possible to keep students engaged and excited about learning. It only makes sense that twenty first century students want a classroom experience that matches.

ALPHASMART

AlphaSmarts provides schools all over the world the opportunity to teach and learn through their portable computers, often referred to as PDA devices. These tools have basic functions that can immediately increase students' abilities to effectively organize tasks. These devices are also used to encourage student writing. The types of PDAs used in classrooms come with a word processor very similar to the word processor on any desktop computer. Also the AlphaSmart can be used as an assistive teaching and learning device in a mathematics classroom. The PDAs have a calculator that is very similar to the often used graphic calculator. This hand-held device heightens communication between students and teachers. Teachers can both pre and post asses student learning utilizing the AlphaSmart devices. As previously stated, this device can be used in any classroom that uses writing. It can be very helpful for students with dyslexia or other learning or physical disabilities. It is a wonderful source of assistive technology for them. Also the PDA can arguably be most effective in helping students become more organized. All documents are automatically save so students never have to worry about losing there work. It also helps the teacher be organized by taking a few of the large stacks of paperwork off the desk.

As previously stated, this device is almost immediately effective in helping most students become more organized. It is also very effective in helping teachers better communicate with students. Its many functions makes it a wonderful device for the classroom. Although this device has many great functions, it could also deem not so advantageous for some students and teachers. Of course, some parents won't be so open to accepting this device as what would likely become the main source of communication for students and teachers. Also teachers have to be aware that students are different and this device may not be suitable for every student. Of course some teachers will attempt to force this on every student but older conventional ways may be better for some students. Lastly, this device is a very fun gadget. Teachers should encourage students to have fun with the device but also encourage them to always use it appropriately. The AlphaSmart has both advantages and disadvantages.

The AlphaSmart was tested in a third grade class and was an effective device. I personally believe that this device would probably be most effective in higher levels than third grade. I would introduce this device in the second half of the fifth grade year and begin using all of its functions and capabilities in sixth grade. A level of maturity has to be reached before this device can be used in an effective way for the classroom. Middle grades seems to be where it could begin to be an effective resource. I personally like the idea of using this tool in my classroom for students who can use it effectively. I also would use it as a teacher to help me with my organizat. The Pulse Smartpen by Livescribe is a note taker or artist dream. It is a pen that records everything you write. Then whatever you wrote can be downloaded to your computer. Kind of cool, isn't it. The pen is also a voice recorder. The coolest part about the pen is the fact that is has apps which can be downloaded to it making it an even more powerful resource. This ain't just a pen, it's a students dream.

The way is works is like so; you use special notebook to record your information. You can either buy these notebooks or you can print off pages from your printer. For students this pen is awesome for taking notes because you can jot down your note. Then when you can download the notes from the pen onto you computer.

The pen cost around $125 and the notebooks are around $8. That can be costly to some students, but if you can afford it you will have a valuable tool at your disposal. I would not recommend this pen for those people who have problems keeping up with things because it would be costly if lost.

Livescribe is gearing this product toward students and business executives because those are the markets who would actually benefit from it.

I have one of these pens and I love it. I have a dictionary app, which pronounces the word and it's definition scrolls across the pen's screen. I also have a language translation app, which I use to help me translate Spanish. Overall I think the pen was well worth it cost. I purchased mine from a warehouse store as a bundle with pen, ink cartridges, and 5 notebooks for price of the pen at most other retailers.

The flip camera is an easy-to-use camera which holds 8GBs of memory. It is an inexpensive option which has a convenient USB flip out arm that plugs in to your computer.

How can it be used?

The flip camera can be used in the classroom by students creating videos to post on the class blog or wikispace. Because it is inexpensive, the teacher can allow the students to check-out the camera for a limited time in order to film their projects. The teacher could also film instructions for a particular project (such as how to create a glog) and publish the video to the class blog or wikispace so the students could access the instructional video when needed.

What are the advantages or disadvantages of this tool?

The advantages are its easy-to-use functions and lower-than-other camcorder price.

The disadvantages are its small size, which could make it easy to lose, as well as the probability of only having one camera in the classroom, which would make the assignment last longer since more students will have to wait their turn to utilize the camera.

What is the audience for this tool?

The audience for this tool is the students themselves. The students will be able to view their videos as well as any video made by the teacher. The students will be able to view the videos on their home computer, in the library (either public or school), or in the classroom itself, wherever internet access is available.

I believe this tool would be an invaluable addition to any classroom but especially to an eighth grade or a high school classroom. I would love to use this tool when teaching eighth grade classrooms about oral history. The students could use the cameras to create an oral history report on a grandparent. I believe this tool could be used creatively in the classroom.

Screenjelly is an internet based service that records your voice along with whatever appears your computer screen. Once it record what the user wants, he/she can share this recording as a video.

How can it be used?

Screenjelly can be used for instructional purposes in regards to computer based lessons. For example, if one wanted to teach students in a high school English class on how to properly format a research paper in the MLA format, the teacher could perform the steps along with a narration using the Screenjelly program. Once the teacher makes the video, he/she can present it to the class, as well as make it available through email or a class resource page.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of this tool?

The advantages of this program are that it is easy to use and free. All one must do is simply hit the record button, and the program will record every action performed on the screen. The main disadvantage to this program is that the recordings are limited to three minutes; therefore, if the desired instruction takes longer to present, one must record another video.

Who is the audience for this tool?

It can be used for all grade levels and subjects, especially when the lesson requires computer based instructions.

WebQuest- An interactive journey into the world of knowledge

What is the tool? A WebQuest is an inquiry based lesson that includes a variety of activities that are mostly web based. WebQuest include an introduction, task, process, evaluation, conclusion, and teacher page. The task tells the learner what they should be doing. The process is step by step directions on what to do. It would include all the activities and websites needs to complete the WebQuest. The evaluation portion explains how the student will receive their grade, this is often in the form of a rubric.

How can it be used?
WebQuest can be used for any subject. It often includes interactive website that help enhance student learning.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of this tool?
Some advantages of WebQuest are that students are able to work on their own pace without worrying about keeping up with their classmates. Students are also in charge of their own learning. It also gives students the opportunity to interact with technology. A disadvantage is that in order for students to work on a WebQuest they would either work on in at home or the teacher will have to get a computer lab for the class.

Who is the audience for this tool?
WebQuest can be used for most students, depending on how the WebQuest is made; it could be useful for student elementary and up.

Edmodo: Social Networking with an Educational Twist

The students and teachers of the 21st century are no longer satisfied with the idea that learning is a solitary process meant to take place at separate desks with pens, pencils, and books. The more sociable learner of our time demands an education that embraces the free-flowing exchange of ideas between a cornucopia of individuals, who represent a wide variety of cultures, geographic locations, beliefs, and ideas. This exchange of ideas is not confined by the brick walls of a school, and edmodo is striving to change the way students and teachers are learning and communicating with one another.

How does Edmodo work?

Edmodo is just as simple as a Facebook page. Each student from a particular class is given a code by his/her teacher. Once the student goes home and enters the code, he/she is included as a member of that group on its Edmodo page. The student uses a personal username and password to access the page, which allows the student to communicate with the class as a whole or individually. Communication between the class members is done through posts. Unlike Myspace, where you post whatever you want when you want, Edmodo posts are reserved for subjects pursuant to the specific course. The teacher is meant to act as a moderator for the content posted to a course's Edmodo page.

How can teachers use Edmodo?

Edmodo allows educators to facilitate class discussion between students that continue beyond the ringing of the school bell. As I stated above, teachers can view and monitor student posts through their own account. Teachers can also post class handouts and other class materials with the internal library offered by Edmodo. Any document (a course syllabus, readings, poems, articles, etc.) can be posted to the library. Teachers can also assign, receive, and grade assignments all through Edmodo. Click here to see how homework is submitted through Edmodo! Think about it! No more piles of papers to disseminate or grade, and students will be able to view their own grades through the Edmodo system. Edmodo will give teachers more time to teach and students more time to learn. Gone are the days when class time is gobbled up by administrative activities. Teachers can also take polls to gauge student understanding, or to measure prior knowledge. Even the most simple activities, such as hyper-linking, allows teachers to include videos to be viewed outside of class.

I bet Edmodo is just for high school students!

No-if a student can use a computer, he/she can use Edmodo. Students and teachers from middle school and college use Edmodo. Edmodo offers security by limiting access to only students and teachers of a course. However, there is always a risk, as with any on-line service, that someone outside the course may gain access, but the risk is minimal. Any time anyone other than an adult is on-line, parental supervision is essential.

My Opinion

For me, Edmodo is very simple to use and makes learning a more social and interactive process. I wish I could connect to different classrooms across the world using Edmodo, and then, students of different cultures could teach one another, however, I can see the advantage in mimicking the close-knit group of the classroom. I am also afraid that students may begin to believe that getting materials from Edmodo can adequately replace attending class on a daily basis. Human to human interaction should be enhanced by Edmodo, not replaced by it.

Videoconference or videoteleconference is a set of interactive telecommuncication technologies which allow two or more locations to interact via two way videoa and audio transmisssions simultaneously.Videoconferencing is different from videophone calls beacuse it is meant to serve a conference rather than individuals
Video Conferencing is a wonderful tool for the classroom.

***How it can be used?***
It provides students with the opportunity to learn by participating in a 2-way communcation platform. Furthermore, teachers and lecturers from all over the world can be brought to classes in remote or otherwise isolated places. Students from diverse communities and backgrounds can come together to learn about one another Students are able to communciate, analyze, explore, and share information and ideas with each other. Through "virtual field trips" can bring opportunies to children to visit another part of the world to speak with others, visit a zoo, or a museum

***Audience***
VideoConferencing can be used in the classroom as we discusssed above to help enhance a students knowledge of the world around them. It can be used in meeting around the world it connects as if you were having a face-to-face.

***Pros and Cons***
P: If you are having an international business meeting, it will cut down on travel costs and help with reducing waste that occurs over long flights.
P:Connects people with busy schedules.
C: Technology sometimes can be unrelieable
C: It might be hard for lower income schools to be able to afford the technology needed for videoconferening.

***What do I think?***
I think this is a wonderful tool especially for children who do not have alot of resources. It allows them to step out into the real world around them, while keeping them safe in their comfront zones. The vitual field trip is a great example of this.

What is the tool? Rubistar is an online tool, for teachers, that allows them to easily make rubrics for all sorts of assessments. You can create rubrics for presentations, interview assignments, class debates and more.

How can it be used? Like all of the other tools in the 4teacher’s family (see below), Rubistar just makes teaching easier. After choosing your subject, Rubistar asks you what sort of project you are creating a rubric for (ie. class debate, oral presentation, writing assignment). Then it gives you tips on what you could assess the student on. You can either choose these or change them and create your own. After doing this, you can either save your rubric or print it immediately.

The Advantages of Rubistar:

What are the advantages and disadvantages of the tool?

Through research the tool has shown the ability to increase student's achievement in the classroom.
Teachers can connect with one another and share ideas and resources to increase the achievement of the students through blogs.
The videos and photos allow the students to connect the material to real world applications so it makes the material more meaningful for the student.
There are often subjects that there are no media on.
The videos do not often connect with the material that is being taught.
It takes time to view the videos to see which one would best match with the lesson but the website gives an overview of each video and shows how long they will run for.

I love united streaming. It has helped me find many ways to liven up a boring lesson. It has also helped me connect with teachers who has been teaching for many years. I have gotten many lessons and puzzles from the website. It truly is a good resource for teachers to use.

The I-Pod Touch: A Wonderful Educational Tool for Today's Tech Savy Students

What is the tool? I-pod Touch. Yes, the i-pod touch that millions of kids and adults alike use to download and listen to their favorite songs can now be used for educational purposes with the thousands of downloadable applications - apps - made specifically for the family of Apple-Mac technology, including the i-pod touch.

How can it be used? For student use in the classroom, students can listen to class pod-casts, national pod-casts such as CNN Student News, and teacher created pod-casts that parents can use to keep updated as well. This mobile device allows the students more freedom to learn on the go.

Also, There are apps for the i-pod touch that specifically address many educational needs such as, for Language Arts, an app called Dragon Dictation, a free speech-to-text app, as well as apps that lead to informational sites such as Dictionary.com. Students can also use the device to gain access to directions, instructions and tutorials on virtually any type of technology available.

Furthermore, When a teacher wants to include new technology in a lesson plan, she can save valuable time by listing links to websites, videos and applications that the students can use to become familiar with the technology at their own pace. This could be extremely helpful in an integrated classroom where students might move at very different paces. The students who understand the technology can move forward with an assignment while the teacher focuses her time on helping those who need additional instruction.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of this tool? The advantages include direct access to the world wide web, straight from the device, to download applications without the use of a computer. The teacher can select a program for use in a lesson and if she has access to class i-pods, the lesson can begin immediately.

The only huge disadvantages I can find are the size; the screen is small and not conducive to reading for long periods of time, and the cost; an i-pod touch averages $150 to $200 for one, making it difficult to have enough for each student, unless they own one themselves.

Who is the audience for this tool? Before researching the applications available for the i-pod touch, I would have thought middle to high-school age children. However, upon further research, I have discovered several instances where 4th and 5th graders are using the i-pod touch to play games that practice math skills, study current events and geography, and to get help writing essays for English.

Google Earth can be used to give students a real life view of anything in the world. Instead of viewing pictures out of a text book, the students can virtually see it right within their own classrooms.

The advantages to this program are that the students are physcially being able to see the accurate picture of what they are studying, making it more of an appealing subject to the learner. A visual of something is sometimes more effective, than words spoken or a simple picture out of a text book. The disadvantages would be if the program was down for reason or if the picture was blurry and the students could not grasp an accurate concept of what is being taught and discussed.

I believe this tool could be used for any grade level. Any visual is good and necessary for any age learner.

My classroom tool is overhead projectors. It is an older tool in the classroom that is still used some today. It allows sheets to be projected from a transparency to a screen on the wall.

How can it be used?

It can be used for almost any subject in the classroom. The teacher can run off worksheets for students in the form of a transparency or use a blank one to write anything necessary for the class to see. Using an overhead projector can be used as a way for students to take notes, complete morning work, or look at pictures as a class. It is a way for every student to see the same thing and the teacher has control over it.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of this tool?

Some advantages of overhead projectors are that the teacher controls what the students are looking at as a class. It also allows for the teacher to face the whole class while they are learning. Overhead projectors provide a great form of visual learning for that multiple intelligence. It also can be a good part of classroom management because most kids want to get involved to use the technology incorporated into the class.

Some disadvantages might be that technology has changed so much since overhead projectors. They seem to be coming outdated since the invention or smart boards, power points, access to internet, etc. Overhead projectors might also have a disadvantage because of the amount of space they require in a classroom. Most teachers keep theirs on rolling carts to move them out of the way necessary.

The audience for the tool would be the students; it can range from any grade level. The younger students seem to respond more to the overhead because they get excited over the opportunity to write on the screen. My opinion of the usefulness of the overhead projector is that it is a great tool to share in the classroom. I think that it was more popular in the ninety’s and not enough teachers use them anymore because there are so many other ways to include newer technology in the classroom. I think that overhead projectors are very easy to use and are something that should not be taken out of the classrooms.

Speech-to-Text Assistive Software

    College is a tough place to be for everyone. There are deadlines, papers, assignments, labs, and lectures. It is even more difficult for those students who need extra help, whether it be wheelchair bound students or students with learning disabilities. A particular group of students with disabilities that I have seen excel in college life recently are deaf students. In a class a couple semesters ago we had a deaf student who brought in assistive technology, provided by the school, to help her actually understand the lecture. Lectures for deaf students are among the biggest hardships I've seen in a long time. However, this student had the most amazing software. What she did was provide the professor with a microphone that he clipped to his lapel or jacket, and as he spoke everything he said was transcribed onto a word document. From there, she took her own notes. I believe that this tool is a marvelous invention and should be used a whole lot more in classrooms, not just for the hearing impaired, but also for a various array of disabilities.

    There are three types of Speech-to-Text software that are used in the education setting. Older models are those that use Communication Access Realtime Translation (CART). This uses stenographic machines and computer software to translate what is said into a word document. It takes exactly what it is said when it is said and translates it; this is how it get's the term 'realtime'. This software is verbatim. Since it is an older software, another person types what is said on the stenographic machines and it is immediately transcribed onto a screen for the person who is hard of hearing to see. What's even niftier is that this software can send the information globally over the internet in realtime as well! Furthermore, the text displayed differentiates between speakers and describes sounds. Another model, which is almost exactly like this one, is Computer-Assisted Note taking (CAN). It uses the same steps, but is not word for word like CART. The third software used, which is used a lot more now than CART, is Typewell. It uses the same basic idea and steps, but is a more updated software program.

    The situation that I saw however, the student didn't need a stenographer to type what was said; the microphone picked up what was said and typed it into the document. There are several softwares that do this, some of which come standard on a PC now. Microsoft XP and Vista both come with Voice Recognition software, where you can run your entire computer via voice. For note taking, you open Notepad, command the computer (via mouse) to 'dictate' and then everything spoken into the microphone is transcribed onto the document. If this is not enough of a service, there is a software called Dragon NaturallySpeaking. This works the same as the Microsoft programs, but has its own documentation processors that transcribe the speech. You can make letters and more in the programs. Yet another software that is even more innovative is that of VoiceBase. This software is entirely internet based. It is operated the same way: using a microphone to translate into text, however, this software records the speech, translates it, and posts it on the internet. You can search your recordings for a specific phrase or word, and you can share via Facebook or Twitter. This would be an excellent tool for the classroom!

The advantages of the tool are obvious: ease of accessibility for students who are deaf, a backup tool for other disabled students, a teaching tool for students on extended absences or sick students, blog posts for homeschooled students/parents, as well as successful integration and involvement of disabled students. However, there are some disadvantages. For example, the students cannot see the inflection of the voice. Also, if there is a joke transcribed, they may not understand because it is spoken differently than read. Furthermore, if you have an ESOL student, they may not be able to understand all of the words written or spoken. Finally, you may have a student who does not have access to the computer at home.

I do believe that this is a tool that should be standard in schools. There are so many ways to use Speech Recognition, whether it is in a special needs classroom or a general education classroom. It is beneficial for children with dyslexia, dysgraphia, and hearing impairments. It is also a valuable tool for the teacher, so that they themselves can see what was discussed in class for that lesson. This information can be used in so many ways (blogs, podcasts, make-up work, etc.) that it is obvious it is an essential tool for education today.

The ELMO Doc Cam-"Enhances Teaching, Learning, and the Interaction Between the Two!"

The ELMO is the marriage between a camera and a projector. It takes classroom projectors to a whole new level. Imagine not being restricted to standing 6 feet in front of the board right in the middle of the classroom. Imagine having the freedom to move to any spot in the room and still lead the discussion for the class. Imagine being able to take a page from your favorite classroom book and have every student read over your should with only one copy. With an ELMO, all this and more, is possible.

The ELMO is a full color document camera that takes whatever you place under the lens and projects its on to the board. What’s great about this is that the projector and lens are two separate entities so you can set the projector up in one spot, and the lens somewhere else so you are not in the middle of the classroom blocking the view of students. You can take any worksheet, book, newspaper clipping, picture, painting, calculator, or anything else you want to share with the class and place it under the document camera. It will then project this image live on the screen. What I find particularly interesting is that the camera can freeze the image on the screen so you can take the book or whatever it is you were sharing with you as you walk around and talk to the class. Or, you can freeze half the screen only. This comes in handy when you are working out a problem and you want to keep the original question up there while having room to work out the answer.

Done are the days of transparencies and visa vi markers. Now all you need is regular paper and pens, or any medium for that matter. The diversity is what makes this so appealing. It doesn’t matter what you want to share, you don’t have to make copies on transparences before sharing with the class. You just lay it under your ELMO. The ELMO can also zoom in on part of a page. For example, if you only wanted to show problem 8 and 9, you can zoom in and only show these two problems. Also great for students who may have a hard time seeing the often small print that is usually on a transparency

One disadvantage to the ELMO is that it tends to have a lag time from when you display something to when it appears on the board. This is most noticeable when you are actually writing as you talk. The image appears a second or so after you write it. Not a big issue, but you must be conscience of it as you are talking so you don’t get ahead of yourself. Another disadvantage is that its not interactive like the smart board. But it does have a remote control to wirelessly zoom in or switch from freeze frame to live, ect. You can also store images that you freeze on a flash drive or to your computer.

The main audience that’s applicable to us is teachers, all grade levels. I think that more upper grades use projects and the like more than the lower grades, but I feel that all grade levels could benefit from such a tool. It also is beneficial for doctors, lawyer, businessmen, salesmen, or anyone else who common speaks to large groups of people. They have slightly different models as well that cater to each specific group.

I think this is a great tool to aid in classroom learning. I’ve been in several classrooms where this is available and while there is a slight learning curve to it, its benefits outweighs the costs of taking the time to learn how to use it. The students love it as well and I love that you can put any medium under the lens to share with the students. Then that newspaper clipping from last year becomes a learning tool that I can share with the whole class. Overall, I feel that it is a very useful tool.

What is the tool?

The tool I am discussing will be Inspire Data, an application that can be downloaded that allows the user to manipulate and interpret data into graphs.

How can it be used?

Inspire Data can be used by both teachers and students throughout high school mathematics courses. Teachers would be able to use the program to represent different graphs to students so they can realize when certain graphs are more useful than others and in which situations to use them. Students could also use Inspire Data to do projects in their courses so that rather than having to draw out every graph they could use the program to just enter their data and it would create the graphs for them.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of this tool?

The advantages of using Inspire Data is that it can make the difficult and time consuming task of drawing graphs relatively easy. It allows the students to get the full picture of the graph without having to hand draw every point and every little thing on the graphs.

The disadvantage of Inspire Data is that it could hinder the students’ actual ability to draw and represent their statistics on paper when the time comes. This could affect them if they were ever taking a test or trying to get some work done in class and did not know how to represent it because they relied on the program to do it for them.

The tool is for students, teachers, or even business men and women because the ease of not having to draw out all graphs could make anyone life easier. Most business men and women also use Microsoft Excel a lot just to represent their data but with this program you could make colorful well developed graphs that could better appeal to colleagues.

What is this tool?
An Ipad is very a very thin device that has all the functions of a desk top computer. It can connect to the Internet and has a keyboard to type and navigate. There are many programs on each Ipad that can use such as Word, Powerpoint, and many others you would see on a real computer.

How can it be used?
At each students own desk, each student can explore the Internet, interact on a website the teacher has set up for them, write a paper, take notes, do a project, read a book or even update a journal. There are endless ways Ipads can be used in the classroom.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of this tool?

Advantages: For being such a small device the Ipad has very good speed when it comes to the Internet and applications. It also has a 9-11 hour battery life which is awesome.

Disadvantages: Like any new technology, students become dependent on the spell check and never learn to find and correct their own mistakes. Also some students might find it hard to get used to typing on the keyboard.

Mostly older teenagers and adults use this product, but that doesn't mean younger students can't benefit from it.

PBS Teachers is a website for teachers to interact with each other and further their knowledge on teaching. It allows them to discover new and effective ways to teach and incorporate technology in their teaching methods.

How can it be used?

This website allows you to become a member in order to speak with other teachers and have all the advantages of the website. It allows a teacher to pick a specific grade level and subject that you are interested in. After picking the grade level and subject, it provides blogs, articles, resources, and professional development regarding your topic of choice. A teacher can also blog and read and respond to other blogs posted from other fellow teachers.

What are the advantages?

One major advantage of this tool is that you are allowed to interact with fellow teachers from across the world allowing you to ask questions, comment, and share ideas on new and effective ways to teach a classroom. Another major advantage to this website is that everything is absolutely free. The third advantage is that this website provides articles to further the teacher's knowledge on events and changes being made in the classroom. The last advantage is that PBS is already known for educational purposes which means that several people with already be involved allowing you to interact with more people.

My opinion on the usefulness of this tool?

I like this tool for the simple fact that you can have an actual conversation with fellow educators. Communication boards make language visible and accessible for individuals who have speech impairments.These low-technology communication displays consist of photographs, symbols, words/phrases or a combination of all three. Typically, multiple communication boards are developed to address both specific and generic vocabulary needs in a variety of contexts.

How can it be used?
Students use communication boards as static displays from which to select vocabulary to establish topics and construct messages. Multiple boards can be organized into communication books with indexed categories of vocabulary and tabs for easy access to the particular topic board that is needed. Communication boards are used in combination with other aided and unaided systems and also serve as back-up when high technology systems fail or are unavailable. Boards can be designed in a variety of ways and used for a variety of purposes, including the following:

Core and/or fringe vocabulary
Visual scene displays, categories, parts of speech, carrier phrases plus single words, phrases/sentences

Advantages: One advantage of communication boards is the fact that it helps patients better express themselves as well as their needs. Secondly, they also can ease frustration patients feel when trying to convey their needs.
Disadvantages: A disadvantage of these types of graphical systems, however, is the fact that the partner has to pay attention to the communication board when the child is using it, and not to the child; likewise, the child has to look at the board, too, instead of the partner's face. In addition, the child must use another method to obtain the attention of someone who is not close by and attending. Adults may also have to learn the symbol system being used.

What is an interactive white board?

An interactive white board, most commonly known as a Smartboard, is a wide range term which describes when a computer and a large video display creates a touch sensitive surface, and also allows the computer to be controlled by the board.

What are they used for?

An interactive white board is used within school classrooms to enrich the learning process and aid in teaching lessons. The inclusion of interactive white boards allows for a more collaborative class. Students can draw and interact with the information on the screen. Studies have shown that the interaction with the white board increases the retention of the information learned. In the business environment they are used in similar ways: they increase productivity and allow work completed on the white boards to be emailed to a large amount of people which can be printed as well.

Do they have any advantages?

There are several advantages to having interactive white boards in classrooms. As I stated before, studies have shown that students retain more information when they are taught with an interactive white board. Using an interactive white board helps students learn in a new way that captures their attention and keeps them engrossed in the activities. Too much of a good thing can create problems, so I would not use the interactive white board every day. This could be used when a teacher is trying to teach students skills or demonstrate an idea which requires students to be interactive. Students stay engaged because they are involved and are not destined to stay in their chairs.

Sounds good, any disadvantages?

There are several disadvantages to interactive white boards in classrooms and they all deal with money. The obvious disadvantage to interactive white boards is the expense of supplying several classrooms. The costs range from several hundred to several thousands of dollars apiece. Another disadvantage is educating the teachers to use the interactive white boards successfully in the classrooms. Each school would have to dedicate time and money into educating teachers and ensuring they are comfortable enough with the technology to use it in the classrooms. Maintenance of the interactive white boards would be another disadvantage in these strenuously financial times. I do not mean the actual cleaning of the boards but the continual synchronization of the board to make sure that it works properly.What good is a piece of equipment if it can't fulfill its duites?

The interactive white boards have several audiences: schools, businesses and sports workrooms. In schools they are useful in classrooms, but also in conference rooms for professional development. For businesses they are useful because the information created can be printed for easy distribution. They are useful in sports workrooms as they can be drawn on and allow for coaches to interact with the video they are reviewing. Interactive white boards can be used in almost any area of informing a group of people about a certain topic while displaying visual images.

What is your opinion on the usefulness of this tool?

As a future teacher, I believe the interactive white boards are a useful educational tool to be used in the classroom. I have never used an interactive white board or been in a classroom with one, but I can see how they would capture students' interest. I am all for any tool or gagdet that will capture a students' attention or increase their learning. I do not think interactive white boards should be used as a crutch to teach classes but as an enhancement to the lesson.I believe there is a fine line that teachers should be aware of when teaching students. There are many lessons that could be expanded or enhanced by interactive white boards such as editing in an English class or a geography lesson in a History class, and the list is endless. An interactive white board as a tool for enhancement rather than a forced tool to be used, will engage students' attention and increase their learning as it may connect with their different learning styles. Students are familiar and interact with some form of technology every day, so it only makes sense to include technology into the classroom to grab their attention.

Since I am a pre-service teacher I am very eager to include new forms of technology into the classrooms; anything that enhances learning and connects with students is a great idea. I am excited to connect with students and help them understand the new and difficult concepts that they are taught in school. I think if teachers can deliver the same educational lesson in a new and creative way that students may be more apt to learn or pay attention.

What is it?

Have you ever heard of the program called Animoto? If you haven’t then here are a few things to interest you and get you trying it. Animoto is a tool that analyzes the provided photos, video clips and music, using them to generate a video similar to a trailer. The Animoto website claims that no two videos will ever be the same. This tool is an educational tool that almost mimics PowerPoint’s but in a more modern fashion.

How can it be used?

This tool can be used to engage your students or have your student’s creating an interesting video that incorporates music, images, and live footage that they can upload to YouTube.This can also be used to create slide shows for weddings, family members...etc

Advantages and Disadvantages

There are many advantages and disadvantages to every website tool. Some of the advantages of Animoto is the ability to create any video you would like and utilize music from your library or from the library they have provided for you. It gives you different designs to choose from and some of it is free. The disadvantage of Animoto is the fact that if you want the pro designs you have to purchase it. You have to sign up to use the site and it takes 7 days to respond if you can use it or not. The intended audience is for everyone. I feel as though it reaches to Educators and students, real estate, and photographers. However, anyone can really use this site.

What is the tool?

For this blogging assignment, I have chosen computers in the classroom. In an ideal world, every classroom would be equipped with a class set of computers/laptops/net books, for the students to use or every student would be assigned a computer for the school year. Computers have a variety of different uses in the classroom which will be talked about in the next paragraph. But first, I need to address the relevance of computers in the classroom. We are living in an ever increasingly technological world, so it would be doing a disservice to the students if we as teachers did not try to encourage computer literacy and what better way to do this than by having computer for students to work with every day.

How can this tool be used?

The answer to this question is it has endless possibilities. It provides an outlet for students to create work and turn their assignments. It provides students with the tools needed to conduct research in the classroom. Students would be actively engaged in their learning. They could take notes and save them to the schools network so they would never be without their notes. The computers would allow students to answer questions over the topic being discussed in class and get instant feedback. Computers also offer students with handicaps and learning disabilities to participate and interact in class is ways that they otherwise would not be able to.

What are some of the advantages and limitations of using computer in the classroom?

I will start with advantages. Students gain word processing skills when learning to write on the computer. Working on computers fosters collaboration between students and between student and teacher. Often leaders emerge who really enjoy computers and can help others. Computer time promotes problem solving skills. Computer time increases responsibility and independence. Students have a form of discovery and learn through trial and error.

Limitations of the computer in the classroom: Computers for every student could turn out to be very costly. The computer does not replace the need for a teacher in the classroom. Although it does help the student to learn, the teacher still has the responsibility to instruct the students on how to properly use the computer as a tool for learning and not a toy. With that being said, the computer could become a distraction for the students if not used properly in class. Computers do have a tendency from time to time to malfunction or catch a virus. In this event, someone will need to be there to fix such problems. This would also cost a lot of money.

Who is the audience for this tool?

The audience for this tool is everyone from parents, teachers, students, and even the administration. It is almost impossible to get by in today’s world without using a computer at some point in your life. By making computers more accessible to students, we as educators are helping to train the next generation to be successful in our ever increasingly technological world.

In my opinion, the computer would be a perfect tool to facilitate learning in the classroom. As stated earlier, it is hard to make it through the day without the use of a computer. Whether you are surfing the web, writing a paper, or just relaxing by playing a game or watching videos online, Computers have become an integral part of our life, so I feel that it should also find its way into the classroom.

More Uses for a Wii Remote

What is the tool?

The tool is a low-cost multipoint interactive whiteboard using a Wiimote. In English, this is a cheap way to make a smartboard. I don’t know about everyone else, but I don’t have a whole bunch of money just lying around. Smartboards and all the accessories needed to go along with it can get very costly. Johnny Chung Lee, an MIT graduate, has created a program to turn a Wiimote, a computer, a projector, and an infra red pen into an interactive whiteboard.

How can it be used?

The interactive whiteboard has multiple purposes. Specifically related to the classroom, the interactive whiteboard allows for teachers to interact with programs on a computer while all the students watch what the teacher is doing. A teacher can write all the notes on the interactive whiteboard and save the notes so that they can be accessed later on. It is also useful to have students interacting with the computer programs. This way the students get hands on experience, and other students get the benefit of watching what the student is doing.

Advantages:

Some advantages to interactive whiteboards are that the teacher can write notes on the “smartboard” and e-mail them to a student who is absent, to the student in ISS, or even if students miss something while taking notes, the teacher can go back to what was “erased”. Also, this allows a teacher to use such programs as geometer’s sketchpad without running back and forth between their computer and the board while teaching.

Some advantages to the Wiimote interactive whiteboard is that it is way cheaper to get and use in the classroom. Students will have fun using the program to write their answers on the board. This program also allows for up to four IR pens to be picked up at one time, so several students can be using the interactive whiteboard at once, verses the smartboards that only allow one at a time. Another advantage to the Wiimote interactive whiteboard is that it can turn any surface into an interactive space.

Disadvantages:

While this is a cheaper way to get a “smartboard”, you may get what you pay for. This may not work as well as the real deal. Also, downloading the program to your school’s computer maybe a bit of a loop to jump through, as some school districts are very strict about the programs downloaded to their school’s computers. Another disadvantage to this is finding a good place to set up your Wiimote so it picks up the IR pen. It may also be a problem trying to keep up with the IR pens. Also, if you are not tech savvy, downloading and setting up the program maybe a little hard to understand. A lot of the setting up is in computer language, which for me is a bit over my head.

Who is the audience for this tool?

The audience for this tool is very wide range. Anyone from teachers and students in a classroom to people working in the business world can use this technology. In the education field, any age is appropriate for using the interactive whiteboards.

What is my opinion on the usefulness of this tool?

I personally really like this tool! I think it is very beneficial to the classroom. It is very hard to get students engaged and excited about math. The interactive whiteboard gives students the opportunity to get hands on experience with the various math programs, while their peers watch what they are doing. Also, this allows a teacher to access these various programs while standing in front of the class teaching. More broadly speaking, this allows for any teacher to get notes to students who miss class. The Wiimote whiteboard also is more available to all teachers, since money seems to be such an issue.

What is the tool?
GALILEO stands for GeorgiA LIbrary LEarning Online. Galileo is an online database that was created by the state of Georgia to increase the databases and provide equal opportunities for information and resources to all libraries and institutions.

How can it be used?
Galileo is best used when needing credited information about a topic. Many students can use Galileo as a search system for good information they are able to reference to or read for their own knowledge. I have found Galileo the most beneficial when trying to write a research paper because teachers usually require the information to be credited.

Advantages of this tool:
-Sometimes people think they can just “Google” a topic and everything that comes is correct, but that is not true. Anyone is allowed to post anything on Google, but not on Galileo.
-Galileo is a database that only allows information that is credited and factual
-Access to full text books and journals
-Information that will benefit Pre-K+
-Free for Students of participating School Systems
-Holds more than 35,000 Georgia Government Publications
-Holds Georgia’s first online encyclopedia, New Georgia Encyclopedia
-Galileo is constantly updated: removing old information and replacing it with better, up to date information

Disadvantages
-At this time, only educational institutions are eligible to participate in GALILEO.

EVERYONE! Everyone has access to this tool if they want to, but they need to find an institution who will provide them with a password or pay to use the database. I used this information beginning in 5th grade and I still use it today. Galileo serves over 9 million users in Georgia and over 2,000 institutions. Galileo provides information for grades K-12 and college students at all levels, undergraduate, graduate, masters, and doctorate programs.

What is your opinion on the usefulness of this tool?
I think this tool is very helpful because it provides information about important issues and topics that are always from reliable sources. I think Galileo is the tool that allows you to skip the middle mad of figuring out which information will or will not be valuable, because you know everything found here is a useful source. Galileo has been readily available and encouraged at every school I have gone to. I will highly suggest this database to my classroom so they can find valuable information in an easier, more efficient manner.

What is the tool?
The tool I researched was a USB flash drive. USB stands for univeral serial bus. Flash drives come in all different colors, shapes, and capacity size. Flash drives are small self-powered tools that connect to computers through the USB port. Almost all computers now have USB ports. Flash drives are also known as key drives, thumb drives, jump drives, and pen drives.

Uses
Flash drives replaced sloppy disks and are smaller faster, and have high capacity. The most common use of flash drives are to store and transport personal files. Flash drives are also used to secure storage of data, to do system maintenance and troublshooting, to carry applications without having to reinstall them, boosting operating systems, music storage, and still have many other usues.

Audience
This tool could be used for students, teachers, and parents. There are many ways for students to use flash drives in and out of the classroom. Flash drives could be very helpful for teachers to use as a storage device. Parents can communicate better with the schools if they were introduced to flashdrives.

Advantages
There are many advantages of flash drives. An advantage of USB flash drives is that they cannot be scratched. Flash drives are small and easily transported, use little power, and have no fragile parts. There are even flash drives that are completely water proof, which is great for children. Students can work on a group project and will be able to each save a copy if they all had a flash drive. Compared to CDs, flash drives take up much less space. It is much easier to add and remove files and other storage devices. Flash drives are helpful when doing school work because it can serve as a back up if the computer freezes. Students can bring work to and from school without difficulty. Students would be able to have ongoing projects that last throughout the year without the fear of losing their work.

Disadvantages
There are also some disadvantages of flash drives. Flash drives, although earily transported, can be easily misplaced sure to its small size. Price can also be a problem. Even the smallest size capacity is still pricey. With a low capacity flash drive, students may run into the issue of using all the space. A disadvantage for teachers using this tool may be that students will steal other students work by transporting it easily onto their flash drives.

My Opinion

There is so much that could be done with flash drives in the classroom. Technology is constantly changing and students need to be up to date with it. Schools would benefit if they were able to privde USB drives to each student at the beginning of the year. Ther school could give all the students the essentail programs that they will need throughout the year. Flash drives are competely necessary in this day and age, but students still do not know enough about them. They could be used for almost anything and it would benefit teachers, students, and parents in and out of the classroom.

Electronic readers, also known as E-books/E-readers, allow anyone interested in reading to download digital versions of books (from novels to textbooks) and view them on a portable device. Electronic readers are all very similar and achieve the same basic goal – allowing viewers to purchase and view their own digital library. The only variation occurs minimally in the amount of space available for download, the size of the viewing screen, the cost of internet access, and other special features, such as the ability to highlight and underline. Though these have become widely popular for pleasure readers, the audience for electronic readers has recently added school systems to its customer list. More and more frequently schools are trading in the backpacks full of heavy textbooks for these compact electronic versions. For the purpose of this blog I will be exploring this phenomenon and how this relatively new technological devise functions in education. I will specifically note advantages and disadvantages to the integration of electronic readers in the classroom and will explain how I see myself using this technological tool for my specific field, secondary English education.

First, I will discuss the obvious advantages for both schools and individual users of electronic readers. By reading electronic copies of texts, users of E-books are helping the environment by reducing the amount of paper. Environmentalism and the “Go Green” movement have become very popular recently and it’s a trend that has obvious societal benefits. In addition, novels and textbooks are typically more affordable through electronic purchasing. This benefits both the independent owner of an electronic reader and the school systems joining the e-reader revolution!

Some benefits specific to the academic context include the following areas: money, interest, health, and inclusion. As mentioned above, these electronic versions of textbooks are often cheaper than buying actual textbooks, especially with how often updated textbooks are being purchased in schools today. Students are also more intrigued and even comfortable with technology and will find this replacement more compatible with their interests than more outdated texts. In addition to students enjoying this technological advancement, it will also help the back problems frequently discussed about the unhealthy weight placed on students' backs from the weight of textbooks in their backpacks. If students have only one electronic reader, rather than 3-6 large textbooks, they will have significantly less weight putting pressure on their young bodies. These electronic readers also have special accessibility features, such as enlarging text size and plugging in speakers to have the text read aloud, that make them a positive addition for students with special needs.

When it comes to the disadvantages of electronic readers, individuals using it for pleasure reading will probably find none, unless they take a large amount of pride in building a large tangible library (as I do). However, some possible issues in implementing this technological tool in the educational system deal with student responsibility. Issuing students $300-500 dollar electronic readers that are more breakable than traditional textbooks and more appealing for theft, schools increase student liability and parent accountability for any replacement fees. In addition, with this tool, students would have constant access to the virtual world – a source for all types of potential controversy and scandal.

Personally, I feel that despite these possible complications with integrating E-readers into the classroom, the positives far outweigh the potential issues that could arise. This tool seems to be the next step for school literacy. As a result, it is important to begin brainstorming how to utilize them in beneficial ways. For my own future classroom I have contemplated some possible methods of using these electronic readers. Besides my hope for this tool increasing text diversity in my classroom (i.e. more choice when it comes to text selection than provided in literature textbooks), I also see these electronic readers helping me encourage text annotation. When students were using textbooks or novels issued to them by the school, they were banned from writing in those texts. However, as I know from college, the ability to underline, circle, and comment in the margins helps increase understanding and analysis of the text. With electronic readers I can require students to use features on the electronic readers to mark on their digital copies and I can check them at the beginning of class to make sure the students are actively engaging with their texts. I would love for my school to use E-readers!

TimezAttack is a video game which can be purchased to access full-features or downloaded for free to access limited features. For the purposes of this blog I will be detailing features on the free download version of the game. The game allows the user to choose either a male or female character which then goes through a castle/dungeon setting solving multiplication problems. Various levels of difficulty can be chosen so the game grows with the student/player. Repetition is a key aspect in the game. The character will confront a wall with a multiplication problem etched into it such as:

After interacting with the wall with this particular problem two snails will pop out of the wall with the number four located on their shells. The game character will then round up the snails which burst and say “Four” when the first snail is gathered and “Eight” when the second snail is gathered. Thus the game counts in groups of four two times to verbally address what 4x2 equals. The character then throws the snails at the wall with the original problem and again the game counts in groups of four. After all the snails have been gathered and thrown at the wall, the wall opens and a troll is unleashed behind a hidden door. The student battles the troll by completing timed multiplication problems which he/she has already interacted with prior in the game (the prior three walls), therefore, repetition is once again incorporated. After about three or four problems the troll is defeated and the character moves on to another wall. After a certain amount of walls are completed then a boss ogre battle commences in which the student recalls all of the walls he/she has completed so far throughout the game.

As an adult playing this game the repetition becomes a bit boring. However, I have witnessed several students interacting with the game and they cannot seem to get enough of it. I have noticed significant improvements in multiplication recall ability in a student which I tutor once a week after suggesting to her grandmother that they download the free version of the game. The full purchased game offers the same instructional features, as far as I can tell, but includes different “worlds” so the background and location differ.

Students learning the concept of multiplication and students needing additional practice to retain multiplication fluency would benefit greatly from this tool. The game offers pre and post tests to monitor student progression which is a great teacher tool and also shows the student how well they are improving.

I feel very strongly about the usefulness of this program. As mentioned before, I have seen firsthand how it helps improve multiplication fluency and does so in a fun and interactive manner.

Virtual Tour/ Electronic Field Trip

The Virtual Tour

Virtual tours and electronic field trip tools are 3D simulations of an existing location. It is often used to promote real estate, or to advertise destination locations (memorials, monuments, hotels, famous landmarks, etc.) However, it can also be extremely helpful in the classroom.

How is it used in the classroom?

Because education funds are limited, and classroom hours are precious (there is never enough time to do it all), field trips are the first things to go. These trips are exciting and great experiences for students to see history (my content area) up close and personal. Getting to experience history is a lesson unlike any textbook or worksheet could offer. However, by using the virtual tour tool, students can see and hear about the sites and events that otherwise they would only read about. It’s a great way to navigate away from the “norm” and allow students to experience learning in a whole new way! Students and teachers will love the experience of the electronic/virtual field trip.

The Advantages

The Virtual Tour/Electronic Field Trip is the cheapest way (free of cost) for teachers and instructors to help their students learn by experience and visualization. It only costs class time, and preparation by the teacher. Students will love learning by visualizing great historical monuments, buildings, and events, while hearing the important information along with the great tours. When our schools are having to cut our field trips, teachers have to look for new ways to give our students an opportunity to see and learn about all these great historical places we have in our world! These tours are a great asset to every classroom!

The Disadvantages

Although the virtual tour tool is free and available online, many teachers may find it difficult to plan the use of this technology into their lesson. It will take time and planning which will take away from lesson planning. It will also require fast and efficient working technology which is not always available for every classroom. The biggest disadvantage is that although the tour does give students a 3D visual and information, it can’t really be compared to actually visiting the site itself. No virtual tour will ever compare to a firsthand experience. But when that experience is not possible, a 3D virtual tour is the greatest second option!

The Audience

I plan on using this tool in my high school classroom. However, I think if there is an appropriate tour, any teacher, at any grade level (from preschool to college level classes), can find ways to incorporate the Virtual Tour.

Prezi is a web-based presentation tool using a map layout and zooming to show contextual relationships. It is used for presentations, much like powerpoint. However, it is a lot more dynamic.

· How can it be used?

Prezi can be used in many ways. It would be a great tool in the class room. Many teachers use power point to teach lessons, but the best new thing is prezi. With Prezi teachers could make presentations where you can zoom in and out across a large canvas like a white bord(no slides), motion paths, images, and video. The Audience can be anyone! As mentioned earlier, it would be a great tool for the classroom. Students K-12 can benefit if their teacher uses a Prezi.

Skype: The classroom of the future

What is it?

Skype allows people to make voice and visual calls over the internet by way of a software application. It is like most cell phone companies, it is free to call anyone who has the Skype software and landlines and cell phones can be made for a fee. Skype also has additional features which include instant messaging, file transfer and video conferencing. The network is operated by Skype Limited in Luxembourg and partly owned by eBay.

How can it be used?

Skype can be used to view all parts of the world. Students and teachers in the classroom can use Skype to talk to other teachers, students or even use it to go on virtual tours to anywhere in the world.

Advantages:

Even an urban setting where most students cannot afford to have books or any other learning materials can use this to see the entire world. Several classrooms can get together and all watch Skype at the same time. This will allow for students to talk to other children in other classrooms across the world. In addition, virtual tours have become very prominent now. Students can go on tours of museums, oceans, mountains and even view the Seven Wonders of the World. Now, children will not be limited to money or space, because they will be able to view just about anything they want on Skype.

Disadvantages:

Skype can take a minute to buffer sometimes and can go in and out, as well as not working all together. However, as Skype becomes more readily used and our technology advances, which it will, and then I am sure that even Skype will be streamed in High Definition.

My Opinion:

Many people believe that one day, very soon, children will go to school by virtual means. The students will be dropped off at school like normal, but then will go to their classroom where there will be a projection screen and computers set up for all students and the teachers will be teaching virtually. I am not quite sure how I feel about this yet, but it is reality whether we want to face it or not. I do feel however, that some of this wonderful technology is starting to desensitize us as human beings and will continue to do so.

Where on Earth???......GPS in the classroom

What is it?

GPS stands for "global positioning system". Most of you may be most familiar with this device as being the object in your car that tells you how to get from point A to point B. However, it is much more than that! Originally it was originally created by the U.S. Government as a way to overcome the limitations of other navigation systems. Now days, people most commonly use the devices for recreation, research, tracking, and travel. The devices send and receive information via satellites in space.

How can it be used?

As mentioned above, they have many uses. Surveying, map-making, navigation, tracking, recreation, and tagging. These are only a few! Most of these are done by tagging (or marking) and object or location into the GPS system--this then allows almost anyone with a device to see and locate the tagged object. This would be beneficial in the classroom in many ways that can make learning fun and interesting! What better way to go more in depth with map reading, than to create your own map? How much better could calculating distances be, than to track and measure your own locations? There are so many uses in the classroom where this device would come in handy with expounding upon what the kids are learning!

Advantages...

This is a device that can be programmed and reprogrammed to save locations that you or your kids deem necessary. Also, as stated above, they have a multitude of uses that can span across the curriculum. Another great thing about the devices, is that they can be updated with new software rather than having to replace them all the time.....however.....

The disadvantages...

These devices can be quite costly. I understand that many schools may not have the means to purchase such things, but they would be a great investment! You can choose from a variety of types, many of with are highly durable and could withstand several years of classroom use. One more disadvantage, would be that they often can be a little slower when used indoors or in bad weather due to insufficient satellite readings (again, there are some that have better signal strength than others).

Who is the audience?

ANYONE! It isn't exactly perfect for very young children, but i would definitely think the device would be useful for 3rd grade and up! Even out of the classroom, kids can use this knowledge well beyond their classroom days.

What do I think?

GPS is a great way to extend and enhance many, many lessons in the classroom. You can take a common tool and turn it into an interesting new way for kids to learn and understand the validity of what they are learning! I hope that I have the chance to use this in my classroom one day! Even if you only have one device to go around, each kid can still have a hand in on what is going on. Disadvantages of the Flip Camera in the Classroom

There are some difficulties to face if you want to incorporate the Flip camera into your classroom. For one, it is a rather big investment for a school to make. Schools are already strapped for cash in our failing economy, and cuts are often being made in the area of technology. One costs between $150-$200 depending on the model, and if an entire class is using them many will be needed. Furthermore, they are easily droppable, flushable, throw able, etc, and therefore a few are likely to be broken in the process of use. Replacement, therefore, can also add up.

Secondly, they aren’t the best option for capturing good audio. The camera picks up other voices and noises around it and therefore it can be difficult to hear the narration. This can be rather frustrating for students who have spent a lot of time working on their projects if the audio doesn’t work to their liking. Furthermore, it’s not a professional camera, and therefore doesn’t produce the world’s best quality film. Though this is usually ok for classroom use, if the students wanted to use them for something more formal, such as a state or national competition, this camera might not be appropriate.

Lastly, making films can be incredibly time-consuming. Teachers are already pressed for time everyday and it’s difficult to allot the proper amount of time for students to create quality projects. Between planning, practicing, filming and editing, making a film can take many hours that just aren’t available in the classroom. While students will certainly have more fun making a video, sometimes a worksheet can teach the same amount of material in a fraction of the amount of time.

My Opinion about this tool

I think this is a good device to use in the classroom. This tool is a good way to integrate technology into the classroom. The flip can be used into the classroom many ways and make learning exciting. It is so simple to use and light weight it can even be trusted in the hands of younger kids. This is an excellent tool to have in the classroom.
